Updated COVID-19 Safety plan

Oct 13, 2020

Our plans have been to start a regular season in January, with the hope that we could start up practice groups around November. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to obtain confirmation from the schools yet, which is understandable, as everyone is cautious about the second wave. We hope that we can continue with our timeline to start in January, and this is now our focus. With that being said, we will be delaying the opening of our registration until we hear back from them. Rest assured that we will make sure to communicate with you all when we do open registration through email, our website (rcfha.org) and our Social Media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram). Please make sure to follow us for up to date information.

We hope that you will keep us in mind as an option down the line. Over the summer, we had planned for situations like this, but once we get confirmation, we will be ready to open registration right away. In the mean time, please visit our website for our features from players, coaches, and Executive to keep in the spirit of Cosom Hockey, while we are unable to do so for now.

Again, please remember to stay safe and hope to see you real soon!

We are moving forward with our game plan!

viaSport and the BC Government have announced we are in Phase 3 of Return to Sport, which allows us to have league play and competitions within sport cohorts with modified games and matches. We have completed our Safety Plan for the season and submitted to the City of Richmond for approval. Here are some highlights of our proposal:
The following are options of play that we have submitted
Option 1: Regular Cosom Hockey rules
Option 2: Shared Zones model (1 on 1 in each zone)
Option 3: Separate Zone model (each player has their own zone)

If all goes according to plan, here’s what we are expecting this season timeline might look like, subject to final confirmation:

  • Open registration near the end of September
  • Start practices after Thanksgiving
    • Restricted to drills only until at least January due to small gym sizes
    • Use face shields, face-coverings, etc.
  • Exhibition games in November and December
    • Use our Shared Zone model (see Option 2 in Safety Plan)
    • Use face shields, face-coverings, etc.
    • We will re-evaluate at the end of October and determine whether we need to downshift to Option 3
  • Regular Season starting in January
    • Plan to use our regular Cosom Hockey rules
    • Use face shields, face-coverings, etc.
    • We will re-evaluate in December after our exhibition season, make adjustments if necessary, and shift to Option 2 or 3 if necessary
  • Tournament at the end of April/beginning of May
    • Same rules as Regular Season

Note: This plan is subject to change and can be modified at any time in order to reflect the changing pandemic conditions. This is not a set plan but rather a proposal, and we will be continuing to work with the city in order to ensure league safety is maintained.

Be watch out when we get the new season going! Meanwhile, stay safe, stay fit!

Hope you are enjoying the summer! Just a quick update from the executive to let you know we now have a plan on how we might be able to play safely. We are now in the process of running some trials, trying out different types of models that will allow us to social distance while playing hockey. We are also testing the use of face shields for game play. Once we have iron out the process, more information will be forthcoming by mid-August.

In the mean time, stay safe, stay fit!

In light of the current changing situations due to COVID-19, Richmond Cosom Floor Hockey Association is responding to follow the viaSports BC and BC Health Ministry “Return To Sport Guidelines” for the upcoming 2020/2021 season. As with all businesses, school and organizations, some modifications will be made in how we conduct this season. Just as the NHL has a modified season, so will RCFHA.

This page, along with our Social Media platforms, will be updated periodically as our plans for the season solidifies, as well as responding to a changing situation and respond as needed. Please follow us on Facebook, Twitter (@RCFHA), and Instagram (rcfha_official).

At the moment, we are in the process of formulating plans for holding a season. We will be publishing our plan for everyone to view, and once we gain approval from viaSport, we will open registration near the end of September. We feel opening registration later this year will give everyone involved more time to view and follow the changing situations that arise with COVID-19.

Stay safe!
